Support Ukraine
Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has evoked some of the worst memories of war in Europe and the progroms which decimated Ukraine’s Jewish population in the late 19th and early 20th Centuries. Ukraine has a long Jewish history stretching back to the 8th Century CE and many of the elements we identify as characteristic of Ashkenazi Judaism has its roots there. Many of our own congregational families have Ukrainian roots.
While historically the population has not always friendly to the Jewish people, we are concerned today for the safety and well-being of the Ukrainian people who did not choose this war. As always, the greatest suffering in wartime falls upon the innocent.
During our Purim Schpiel on Wednesday, March 16, we are going to encourage our audience to support the Jewish Federation of Greater Portland’s crisis response.
